Two-Color Gummies vs. Center-Filled Gummies: Production Differences
Gummy Molds Team
Two-color gummies and center-filled gummies can both use two separate product masses, but they are not the same manufacturing process. The difference is primarily in how the two masses are positioned inside the finished piece and how the depositor, mold, and formulations must work together.
Two-Color Gummies
A two-color gummy uses two distinct masses to create a visible color or flavor effect. Depending on the depositing setup, the masses may appear as separate sections, layers, bands, or other multi-color patterns.
The important point is that neither mass necessarily has to completely surround the other.
Center-Filled Gummies
A center-filled gummy uses an outer gummy shell that surrounds a separate center material. The center can be a compatible liquid, gel, syrup, flavor system, or functional formulation.
The shell therefore has a structural role in addition to providing texture and flavor. It must contain the center through depositing, setting, handling, packaging, and storage.
Key Production Differences
| Production factor | Two-color gummy | Center-filled gummy |
|---|---|---|
| Primary goal | Visible use of two separate masses | Outer gummy shell containing a separate center |
| Formula relationship | Two masses must deposit predictably together | Shell and center must also remain structurally and chemically compatible |
| Mold geometry | Must support the selected visual pattern | Needs enough internal volume for center fill plus a stable shell |
| Depositing challenge | Color placement and repeatability | Center placement, shell thickness, sealing, and repeatability |
| Quality checks | Color separation, piece weight, appearance | Center position, shell thickness, leakage, migration, piece weight |
Can the Same Machine Make Both?
A compatible dual-hopper depositor can support both two-color and center-filled production when the depositing head and machine configuration are appropriate for the intended product.
The Gummy Molds Dual-Hopper Automatic Commercial Gummy Depositor is designed for compatible two-color and center-filled gummies. It has 20 nozzles total — 10 per hopper — with Siemens PLC and servo control.
That does not mean every recipe or mold will work automatically. Final capability depends on formulation, depositing-head setup, mold geometry, viscosity, timing, and production conditions.
Formulation Requirements
For two-color gummies, the two masses need workable viscosities and timing so the desired visual pattern remains consistent. If one side flows or sets much differently from the other, the appearance can vary.
Center-filled gummies add another requirement: the outer shell has to contain the center. That makes shell strength, center viscosity, migration, and long-term compatibility especially important.
Mold Design Differences
A two-color gummy mold may be selected primarily around the desired external shape and the depositing pattern. A center-filled gummy needs enough cavity volume and depth to create a meaningful internal center while leaving enough shell around it.
For proprietary products, a custom gummy mold can be developed around the actual depositor, tray, cavity spacing, piece geometry, and production method.
Why Nozzle and Cavity Alignment Matter
Automated production requires the mold to line up correctly with the depositing system. Confirm the nozzle count, nozzle spacing, cavity centers, tray dimensions, registration, machine clearance, shot requirements, and product viscosity.

Which Format Is More Complex?
Both formats can require substantial process development, but center-filled gummies generally add more variables because the internal fill must remain positioned and contained over the life of the product.
That can make center-filled development more sensitive to shell-to-center balance, geometry, depositing sequence, storage stability, and packaging conditions.
When Two-Color Gummies Make Sense
Two-color formats can be useful when the product concept depends on visual contrast, multiple flavors, brand colors, segmented appearance, or a distinctive multi-tone design without requiring an internal liquid or gel center.
When Center-Filled Gummies Make Sense
Center-filled formats can be useful when the product concept benefits from a distinct internal texture, flavor burst, liquid or gel experience, or separated functional component. The extra complexity should be justified by the finished product concept.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are two-color gummies automatically center-filled?
No. Two-color refers to the use of two distinct masses or colors. Center-filled refers to a piece where an outer shell contains a separate center.
Can one dual-hopper machine produce both formats?
Potentially, when configured with the appropriate depositing setup for each product. The recipe, depositing head, mold, and process still need to be validated.
Do I need different molds?
Possibly. The correct mold depends on the finished piece geometry and depositing pattern. Center-filled products may require more usable internal volume and tighter control of the shell geometry.
